Germany will be the host country for the 17th edition of UEFA’s European Football Championship, colloquially called “Euro 2024”. This competition is set to start on June 14, 2024, and will offer a whole month full of thrilling matches, packed with noteworthy goals and a highly charged environment.

The UEFA European Championship has a long history that shows how football in Europe has grown. It started with Henri Delaunay from France, who worked in football and had the idea for a competition where the top teams from Europe would play. The initial version, known as the European Nations’ Cup, started in 1960. At that time, because there were just 17 countries taking part, a lengthy qualifying phase was necessary. As years passed, the competition expanded a lot, with more teams joining and people around the world knowing it better. A big change happened after twenty years in 1980 when they made finals bigger for eight teams, then again they added more to have 16 teams in total by 1996. Nowadays, the UEFA European Championship is an important global soccer tournament that fascinates supporters all over the world with exciting games, unexpected tales of less-favoured teams succeeding, and the celebration of a new champion across Europe every four years.

In Germany this year, for the Championship they have 10 stadiums to play in. To be good for a UEFA game, a stadium must fit up to 30,000 people sitting. While Germany has several stadiums meeting the requirements, only these 10 were selected for the competition. The Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region hosts most of them. We will review every stadium with some details about it, what matches will happen there and crucially, how you can reach it conveniently from either an airport or your hotel.

On the 14th of July, 2024 the tournaments final will take place at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

Built in the 1930’s for the infamous 1936 Summer Olympics, this stadium is the largest of the bunch to be featured in this year’s championship. Having been used for previous UEFA matches, most notably a number of matches in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, including the final, it was an obvious choice to include it. It shall also serve as the pitch for this year’s final.

• By Train: The S9 train offers a direct route from Flughafen BER – Terminal 1-2 to S Olympiastadion, taking approximately 1 hour and 9 minutes. This is the cheapest option, with tickets ranging from €3 – €4.
• By Taxi: A standard taxi ride from BER to the Olympiastadion will take about 33 minutes, depending on traffic, and will cost between €70 – €85.

The first stadium in the world with a fully colour-changing exterior, made up of inflated ETFE plastic panels, it seats a total of 70,000 spectators. Otherwise known as the Allianz Arena, due to the company purchasing the naming rights for 30 years, although that name can’t be used during international matches. This stadium also holds the honour of hosting the opening match on June 14th. The area is located on the outskirts of the city, around 15 kilometres to the north of the city centre.

The Westfalenstadion (Westphalia stadium), officially called the Signal Iduna Park, or by its sponsorship name BVB Stadion Dortmund is Germany’s largest stadium, and the third largest in Europe by size, not seating. Since its construction in the 70s, it has hosted a number of prominent international matches, including some in the 1974 and 2006 World Cups, and the final of the 2001 European championship (club games). The stadium is around 15 kilometres away from the airport.

Travelling from Dortmund Airport to BVB Stadion Dortmund for the Euro 2024 matches can be done through various transportation methods:

• By Bus: The AirportExpress bus service operates from Dortmund Airport to Dortmund Hbf (central station), with a journey time of approximately 22 minutes. From Dortmund Hbf, you can take a short tram ride to the stadium.
• By Train: Alternatively, you can take the train from Holzwickede, Bahnhof, which is connected to the airport by a shuttle bus, to Dortmund Hbf. The train journey takes about 18 minutes, and from there, you can continue to the stadium by tram.
• By Taxi: A taxi ride from Dortmund Airport directly to the stadium will take around 18 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

Named originally Neckarstadion, after the river Neckar close by, it is now called the MHPArena, having adopted this moniker in 2023. In its history it has hosted a number of famous games, including matches from the 1972 and 2006 World Cups, and the UEFA Euro 1988, amongst others. Another feat of the stadium is its impressive 115 square metre video walls, which before rebuilding, were the largest of their kind in the whole of Europe. • By Train: Take the S-Bahn from Stuttgart Airport’s underground station, Flughafen/Messe. You can use either S2 (direction Schorndorf) or S3 (direction Backnang), which will take you to Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof in 27 minutes. Trains run every 10 to 20 minutes, and on weekends, every 15 minutes.

• By Bus: The night bus line N8 connects the city center with the airport early in the morning and late in the evening, taking about 40 minutes from Schlossplatz to the airport.
• By Car: If you’re driving, the B27 connects the airport and Stuttgart city center. The distance to Schlossplatz is approximately 13 kilometers, with a travel time of about 20 minutes.

The first stadium of the bunch that includes a retractable roof, the AufSchalke, or Veltins-Arena, is one of the newer stadiums of the group, being constructed in the early 2000s. Similar to the other stadiums, this one also was one of the stadiums used during the 2006 World Cup, with a total of 5 matches taking place. It also serves as a concert venue, with international bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tenacious D, Metallica and AC/DC, among many others.

As Gelsenkirchen, where the stadium is, doesn’t have its own airport, if you’re arriving by aeroplane, you’ll most likely be landing at Essen airport, which is the closest large airport to the stadium.

• There are three main ways to get from Essen Airport (MUC) to the Arena AufSchalke (Veltins-Arena) in Gelsenkirchen for the Euro 2024 matches: train, public transport with a transfer, and a private airport transfer service.
• By train, you’ll need to take a regional train from the airport station to Essen Hauptbahnhof (main station). From there, catch a long-distance train to Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof. This route offers a comfortable journey with minimal transfers, but can take up to 2.5 hours.

Travelling from Frankfurt Airport to Waldstation for the Euro 2024 matches is convenient, thanks to Frankfurt’s well-connected transport system. The home of Hamburger SV, although the broader sport team don’t have anything to do with its original construction. Its current design was finalised in the mid to late 90s, although some subsequent additions have been made. For public transport enthusiasts, you can hop on the Line 392 bus from Hamburg Airport to Hamburg U Hagenbecks Tierpark, then switch to the Line 22 bus to Hellgrundweg, which is a stone’s throw away from the stadium, taking about 1 hour and 2 minutes. Alternatively, the train is a viable option; take the S11 from Hamburg Airport to Hamburg Dammtor, followed by the S5 to Hamburg Eidelstedt, totaling around 1 hour and 8 minutes. For those preferring a direct route, a taxi will whisk you there in approximately 14 minutes, although may be excessively pricey.

The simplest, and much more affordable than a taxi, method remains a Hamburg airport transfer directly to the stadium, or your accommodation nearby. You can book it online in just a few clicks, and even include child seats, if you’ve got some kids coming along for the games.

The Dusseldorf Arena, originally built in 2004, has undergone several name changes throughout its history. Currently known as the Merkur Spiel-Arena, it’s the home stadium for Fortuna Düsseldorf’s football team. In preparation for Euro 2024, the arena will be temporarily rebranded as the Düsseldorf Arena. With its retractable roof offering year-round comfort, the stadium will host 5 games throughout the tournament.

Airport Transfer Service:

Transfer to Cologne Stadium: A final option, for those who prefer a bit more convenience in their trip, is to pre-book a transfer from Cologne airport, which can get them to the stadium, their accommodation, or beyond, easily.

Leipzig’s stadium, officially the Red Bull Arena, was built on the site of the former Zentralstadion and continues to use some of its original structure, and opened in 2004. It’s the largest football stadium in eastern Germany and has witnessed major events like the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Its recent expansion saw space added for a total of 57,000 seats, with further plans being contemplated by the owners, although likely to come to fruition well after the Euro. In total, there will be 4 matches played at this stadium, with the usual format of 3 Group-Stage matches and 1 match in the Finals.

The Deutsche Bahn Regional offers a service from Leipzig/Halle Flughafen to Leipzig Hbf every 30 minutes, taking approximately 12 minutes.

On the other hand, a bus may seem like a better option – it really depends on how you like to travel. The bus line 37591 operates from Leipzig/Halle Flughafen to Leipzig Hbf Ostseite, with a journey time of around 42 minutes, just look out for the sign posts at the airport for the bus stop.

Finally, for the most convenient option, an airport transfer directly from the airport, to either the stadium, or directly to your accommodation in the city is available. By pre-booking, you won’t even have to worry about the inconvenience of delays or waiting at the station for the car to arrive.
