Best Way to Get to Karlstejn Castle from Prague

This article’s goal is to provide you with knowledge and allow you to decide which option is best for you. It’s possible that public transport is ideal for certain passengers because they don’t have much luggage and are on a tight budget. This would not apply to families, as travelling public transport with young children would be a nightmare.

Another possibility is travelling with someone who is disabled, who would benefit from the increased security that a private transfer provides. These are just a few of the things you should think about before your vacation.

The castle itself is one of the most frequently visited castles in the county, seeing more than 200,000 visitors per year. As stated above, the castle houses a number of important pieces of Czech and Bohemian history, but is also a beautiful example of the architectural style present in the country around the 14th to 15th centuries. The castle’s popularity is quite large overseas as well, with a miniature version of the castle being built in the Northern Territories of Australia, albeit by a Czech immigrant.

Is there a Train from Prague to Karlstejn Castle?

Indeed there is. Taking the train is actually the most convenient way to get to the castle, rather than the bus, which requires multiple changes. Both methods shall be detailed nonetheless.

The quickest train that will take you from Prague to Karlstejn is the S7, which runs every 30 minutes. The total transit time is 1 hour 11 minutes and tickets will cost around 70 CZK (or around €3.00).

To catch this train, head to the central train station in Prague and check the departure board to find which platform the train is leaving from. After doing that, head to the train and enjoy the trip. There will be a total of 10 stops along the way, with a trip duration of 40 minutes.

After arriving in the town, the castle is located around 2 kilometres away, although the walk is quite nice in the countryside, you may like to take a quick taxi ride to the castle.

Getting a Bus from Prague to Karlstejn Castle

As stated, if you prefer taking the bus for some reason, you will have to combine a total of 3 different bus rides to get to your destination, which can be slightly inconvenient, especially if you miss one of your connections.

Nevertheless, from the central bus station (Na Knizeci), board the 167 bus to Nemocnice Motol, from where you will have to connect with the 304, which is heading towards Rakovnik. After 6 stops, alight the bus at the Zlicin stop and finally locate the 311 bus towards Revnice, Nadrazi, which should get you to Morina.

Morina is a neighbouring town to Karlstejn, meaning you will have to catch a quick local bus to get there. You could also opt to walk through the hilly region and get to the castle, if you don’t mind a roughly 3 kilometre walk.
The same tickets that work on the trains, also work on the buses, thus the ticket price will be the same, at 70 CZK (or the equivalent of €3.00).

Distance from Prague to Karlstejn Castle

The two aren’t too far apart, with a total distance of around 30 kilometres by road. The duration of the trip, depending on the transportation method you choose, will vary from 45 minutes to 2 hours.

Various Transportation Options from Prague to Karlstejn Castle

Your choice of transport is somewhat limited if you want to use public transport, as the train is your only efficient option. Fortunately, when it comes to private transport, you have a plethora of options. You could try hailing a taxi from the side of the road, but this can result in a huge fare as drivers often charge too much, and may supplement an additional fare for driving in the mountains. Alternatively, you can try to make the journey yourself with a rental car.

There are a number of providers in Czechia, but you’ll have to pay an expensive deposit for insurance before you can rent the car. This can leave you out of pocket before you even start your trip. Another problem with car rental is that you have to find your way around the small mountainous roads in a country you are not used to. This, coupled with the sometimes unpredictable driving behaviour of the Czech could make the trip quite unpleasant. So there’s really only one option left. Can you guess what it’s? An AtoB transfer, of course!

Cheapest way from Karlstejn Castle to Prague

As is the case for pretty much every article we write, public transport is your cheapest option, with ticket prices costing just a few euros. But, hold up for a second – if you are a larger group, let’s say 6-8 people, then booking with AtoB is your best bet, let us explain why.

If you split the cost of the transfer between all members of the group, you will actually end up paying roughly the same per person, as you would for public transport. With the added luxury of a private transfer, making this choice is pretty obvious, right?
