Rome Private Airport Taxi

Transfers from Rome Fiumicino International Airport offer you the chance to pre-book a personalised ride between one of the country’s main airports and any chosen destination in Italy, whether you’re staying in a hotel or accommodation near the Colosseum or are headed to any other location beyond.

Fiumicino sits outside the capital, so it doesn’t mean you’re landing right in the city. There’s still a final leg between the terminal and your accommodation. A private taxi from Rome Fiumicino, as well as a return transfer, could successfully remove that part of the planning.

Did you know? Fiumicino (also known as “Leonardo da Vinci”) is Italy’s busiest airport, with more than 50 million passengers registered in 2025, making it a very different experience from regional airports.

Landing at Fiumicino: Here’s What Happens Next

Fiumicino currently handles arrivals through two distinctive terminals: Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, so expecting someone to just “meet you in the arrival hall” isn’t very helpful.

Instead of assuming where you’ll land, you should check your flight details. Terminal 1 handles Schengen and domestic flights, while Terminal 3 manages primarily non-Schengen flights.

After baggage claim, you can easily follow the signs to the exit, where our professional drivers normally greet clients at the agreed meeting point, holding a name sign.

Good to know: Fiumicino has its very own railway station. The Leonardo Express train runs non-stop to Roma Termini and back to the airport, with the whole trip taking just 32 minutes.

Where Can You Travel from Fiumicino?

The city of Rome is the most obvious choice, but the airport is also well located for the coast and onward journeys across central Italy.

Even Rome itself is a fairly broad choice. It can be a hotel near Termini, an accommodation close to Vatican City, or an apartment in Trastevere. All of these can mean quite different trips, especially when traffic comes into play.

Let’s take a closer look at the most popular final stops among travellers landing at Fiumicino:

Travel tip: Don’t count on your Fiumicino transfer distance alone. Rome’s traffic can turn two addresses with the same distance into two different trips, especially during rush hour.

Do You Actually Need a Private Transfer Service?

It depends on where and how you’re travelling from Fiumicino Airport. If you’re solo-travelling and staying near Roma Termini, then the Leonardo Express would be difficult to argue with.

A private taxi from Rome Fiumicino Airport makes more sense when you’re travelling in a larger group with several suitcases, even if your accommodation is 30 minutes away. So, a pre-booked transfer can be particularly useful if:

  • You arrive early in the morning or late at night;
  • Your accommodation isn’t located near a railway station;
  • You are travelling with children, other passengers, or a lot of luggage;
  • You need an airport connection between Fiumicino and Ciampino;
  • You want to reach Civitavecchia for a cruise;
  • And finally, your final stop is well beyond Rome.

What to Check Before Travelling through Fiumicino?

If you’re planning a transfer from Fiumicino, make sure to start with your correct flight number, terminal number, and exact destination rather than simply entering “Rome”. At an airport as big as this, these details could make your arrival easier.

Also check:

  • How many passengers and how much luggage, so you can choose an appropriate vehicle;
  • Whether you need a child seat or want to add extras;
  • Enough traffic allowance if you’re travelling through Rome;
  • The gap between flights if you’re switching airports;
  • Your cruise departure time if your final stop is Civitavecchia.

Travel tip: If you’re connecting with Ciampino Airport, consider a generous amount of time in-between rather than planning around the theoretical road time.

Local Tips

Arriving at Fiumicino Airport?

Here’s What to Expect

Fiumicino isn’t the centre of Rome

Landing at this airport still leaves you about 30 km from the Rome city centre. Don’t plan your activities too tightly around your landing.

The airport has a Rome Tourist Infopoint

Fiumicino has an official tourist information point with multilingual staff ready to help you with transport information and the Roma Pass.

FCO and Ciampino are completely separate

If you’re connecting through CIA, you need to travel across the Rome metropolitan area, so leave a generous buffer between the two airports.

Know what ZTL means

Rome has restricted-traffic zones in its historic centre. Don’t assume a pre-booked taxi can just drive to every central address.

Keep your hotel name at hand

Rome’s historic centre has plenty of small streets with similar names. The property name and a saved map pin could be more useful than the address alone.

Carry a refillable bottle when in Rome

There are nasoni drinking fountains all over the place, providing free drinking water, which is especially practical during hot sightseeing days.

Check your bill for coperto

Some restaurants in Rome have a cover charge, which isn’t a tip. Tipping is not mandatory in Italy.

Don’t forget to validate transport tickets

Paper tickets for buses, trams and metro in Rome must be validated when you start your journey. Some regional train tickets also require validation before boarding.
