Best Way to Get from Sorrento to Naples

The best way to get there is dependent on your own travelling style, as well as how much luggage or other passengers you are travelling with. If you are in town for a family holiday with young children or elderly parents, taking public transport may be uncomfortable. On the other hand, if you are travelling by yourself, exploring the scenic coastal rail route may be a fun experience!

Prior to detailing transportation, let’s talk about Sorrento a little (for more info on Naples, head over to our dedicated Naples!).

The city has existed for many centuries, with the Romans originally calling it Surrentum. Since then it has become a popular tourist destination, and often used as a starting point for the “Amalfi Drive”, a long coastal road from Sorrento to Amalfi. In addition to beautiful roads, this city, and the wider region, is known for the creation of Limoncello, as well as numerous other wines, nuts and olives. The climate is considered Mediterranean, with mild, wet winters and warm dry summers. The warmest month is August, and the coolest January.

Is there a Naples to Sorrento Train?

Yes, there is. The train line you will need to take is the Circumvesuviana, which runs between Naples and Sorrento every half an hour approximately, starting at 6 in the morning and running until almost 10 in the evening. The price of a ticket is €3.60, and can only be purchased at the ticket window or from one of the newspaper stands at the station.

The train to Sorrento departs from track 3 of Garibaldi station, unless otherwise specified by the departure board. You can also catch the train from the Porta Nolana station, if that is more convenient. In total, the trip will take 1 hour 10 minutes and will make stops in a total of 12 stations along the way. The Circumvesuviana trains do not offer luggage space, guaranteed seating and are not air-conditioned. If you prefer all of these, then taking the Campania express will suit you better. Tickets for this line cost €8.00 and can be purchased either online or at the station.

Travel Tip: Carefully check the departures board at the train station to ensure you catch the quickest train. For more info on the exact trains, you can check out the official Italian rail website.

Taking a Bus from Naples Airport to Sorrento

There are a few different bus routes one can take to get from Naples Airport to Sorrento, some direct, others not.
From the airport, you will need to board an Alibus to the city centre. If you prefer to take public transport buses, you will need to catch the 5000 bus from Garibaldi station. You will need to buy separate tickets for all the buses, as they are run by different providers. In total, the trip should cost around €10.

If you prefer a direct bus ride, there is a popular privately-owned bus provider which services this particular route at convenient intervals throughout the day. This specific bus route starts from the central station, thus you will still need to catch the Alibus there first.

Travel Tip: Tickets for the first buses discussed can be bought from the drivers, whereas for the privately-owned buses one will need to purchase tickets online first.

Various Transportation Options from Naples to Sorrento

As has been discussed thus far, when it comes to public transport, in the form of train, bus and ferry, you are spoiled for choice. These methods are cost effective and mostly reliable, although can often be overcrowded, especially during the summer months. If you wish to avoid all the crowds, and the possibility of having to catch a later ride than intended, you will need to hail a taxi, rent a car, or book a private transfer with AtoB.

Before discussing the latter, we shall first point out some of the downsides associated with hailing a standard taxi or renting a car. For the former, you can oftentimes be overcharged for a trip, with drivers including additional costs if there is traffic, or if it is night time. Aside from this, taxi drivers usually won’t speak English, making communication a bit of an issue.

For can rental, you have the ability to make up your own schedule, and discover the area as you wish. The issue that arises with car rental, aside from the hectic driving style in Italy, are oftentimes large insurance waivers that must be paid before you can take the car. Although returnable, they will usually leave you out of pocket before your trip even starts.

Before providing you with the best option, let’s talk about the cheapest.

Cheapest Transfer from Naples Airport to Sorrento

Public transport once again takes the lead as the cheapest option, with the train being the most affordable overall, and direct. For less than €10, you can get to Sorrento, with little hassle, although there may be delays.

AtoB’s airport transfers in the region offer vehicles in a number of classes; with vehicles that can handle just a few passengers as well as large groups. With a wide range of add-ons, we guarantee that you get the perfect transfer, every time.
