Best Way to Get to Athens Airport from Rafina Port

When it comes to choosing the best mode of transportation from Athens to the Port of Rafina, it ultimately depends on the individual’s travel needs.

Available are a variety of options to choose from, each with their own number of pros and cons.

Factors such as budget, time constraints, and personal preferences can all play a role in determining the ideal transportation method. Whether it is speed, comfort, or affordability you seek there is sure to be a mode of transportation that can meet your needs. So, let’s explore the different options and find the perfect fit for your journey to the Port of Rafina.

Rafina is a port, which serves a number of ferries travelling to the southern part of Euboea as well as most of the Cyclades islands. It is considered Athens’ second busiest port, after Piraeus, but is expected to be superseded by Lavrio Port, which is currently being enlarged. If you are arriving in Athens Airport and have planned a trip to one of Greece’s islands, you will be faced with making the choice of transport there.

Can you get from Athens Airport to Rafina Port by train?

You can get close to the port by Metro, but you will need to supplement the ride with a bus ride. Although there is a train route which goes in the same direction as the Metro, it isn’t recommended as it will be more costly.

By taking the M3 line to Palini, the third stop from the airport, you can board a bus 314 from Gefyra which will take you to Dimotiko Anapsiktirio. From there, board the 310 and you will be taken directly to Rafina port. The duration of the trip is around 1 hour 30 minutes, and will cost €5.50 for an airport express ticket, as well as €1.20 for a standard ticket, which will be needed for the subsequent bus rides.

If you are travelling from the centre of Athens to Rafina, then you can take the M3 Metro towards the Airport, alighting at Palini station, and proceeding to take the 314 and 310 buses respectively, as was described above.

Travel Tip: Make sure to quickly move from the train station to bus stop, as buses will leave (usually) on time.

Is there an Athens Airport to Rafina Port Bus?

Similarly to the train/metro journey detailed above, there is also no direct bus ride from Eleftherios Venizelos Airport to Rafina Port. This means that one will need to take a combination of buses, one express followed by two standard buses in order to reach the port. From the airport, you will need to take the express bus X95 towards Palini, before boarding the 314 from Gefyra to Dimotiko Anapsiktirio, and subsequently the 310 to Rafina Port.

Buses can be subject to road congestion, meaning the travel time can vary depending on the time of day you are travelling. The trip should take approximately 2 hours, although this can increase. You will need to purchase two tickets, one express line ticket for €5.50, followed by a standard 90-minute ticket.

Travel Tip: Tickets can be purchased from ticket kiosks prior to boarding the metro. They are not available on the metro itself.
