Before we get into our top 10+1 list, we want to tell you a little bit about the history of Zakynthos! The island has a rich and varied history that dates back thousands of years. It has been ruled by many different powers over the centuries, including the ancient Greeks, Romans, Venetians, French, and British. Zakynthos played an important role in the struggle for Greek independence from the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century. The island also suffered greatly during World War II, when it was occupied by Italian and German forces. Today, Zakynthos has flourished as a popular tourist destination, known for its beautiful beaches, stunning landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. So, what should you see and do while visiting the island?

Best Places To See and Things To Do in Zakynthos, Greece

1. First on our list is the famous Navagio Beach, also known as the “Shipwreck Beach”. It’s no wonder this beach is one of the most photographed in the world, with waters so blue and clear, it is absolutely perfect for pictures! Plus, who doesn’t love a good shipwreck story?

2. Next up, we have the Blue Caves, a stunning natural wonder that will leave you speechless. Marvel at the deep blue waters and unique rock formations as you explore these caves by boat. Just don’t forget to bring your camera, so you can also try and get the perfect pic!

3. For the adrenaline junkies out there, we recommend a visit to the Porto Limnionas Cliffs. Here, you can cliff jump into the refreshing waters below, or if that’s not your style, simply enjoy the view while lounging on a sunbed with a cocktail in hand. It’s the perfect spot for both adventure and relaxation.

4. Our next recommendation is the charming village of Keri, located on the southwestern part of the island. Take a stroll through its narrow streets and admire the traditional architecture, or rent a boat and explore the nearby caves and hidden beaches. Just don’t forget to grab a bite to eat at one of the local tavernas for a taste of authentic Greek cuisine.

5. Solomos Square takes the next spot on our list, named after Dionysios Solomos, the famous Zakynthian poet who wrote the Greek national anthem (which is also used in Cyprus). The perfect place to grab a bite to eat or do some souvenir shopping, this vibrant square is filled with restaurants, cafes, and shops. And if you’re lucky, you might  even catch a live performance by local musicians.

6. No trip to Zakynthos is complete without a visit to the Venetian Castle in Zakynthos Town. Built in the 15th century, this historic castle offers stunning views of the town and the sea. And if you’re feeling brave, take a stroll along the castle walls for a unique perspective of the island.

7. For those looking to unwind and relax, we suggest a visit to the thermal springs of Xigia. The sulfur-rich waters are said to have healing properties and are perfect for a relaxing soak. Plus, the scenery is pretty easy on the eyes as well.

8. Another must-visit attraction is the Dionysios Solomos Museum (Yeah, the same one from above), located in the capital of Zakynthos. Learn about the life and works of the island’s most famous poet, as well as the history of Zakynthos itself. And if you’re lucky, you might even catch a poetry reading or live music performance.

9. #obligatory monastery post! The Monastery of Agios Dionysios, dedicated to the patron saint of Zakynthos. Take a tour of the monastery and admire the beautiful frescoes and architecture, or simply take a moment to reflect in the peaceful surroundings.

10. Last but not least, we have the Olive Press Museum, where you can learn about the island’s long history of olive oil production. With interactive exhibits and tastings of different olive oils, it’s a fun and educational experience for all ages. Plus, who doesn’t love a good olive oil pun?

11. Bonus: Bay of Laganas – Here, you can catch a glimpse of the endangered Loggerhead sea turtles, an endangered species of turtle that seeks refuge on this beach to lay their eggs. The best months to see this happening is from June to late August.
